High Precision YUV & Colorista…a problem??
I have Stu’s book “DV REBEL GUIDE” and he advocates using “high precision yuv” in FCP when working with yuv codecs of course.
Well, DVCPRO-HD is YUV last time I checked.
I did some contrast adjustment on a shot, bringing the whites down to 95% in fcp scopes and the blacks down to zero without crushing, looks great on my broadcast monitor.
so I export the clip and re-import it and examine with scopes to see if it held….it didn’t, it was over 100% white not quite as bad as it was but well over nonetheless.
I tried the superwhite setting for whites and that didn’t change anything.
What did finally make the colorista settings retain in the exported clip was to change the “high precision yuv” setting in my sequence to 8-bit only. I thought there was an advantage to the high precision setting to keep renders nice, is that really only for higher than 8-bit codecs?
Pardon my stupidity if this seems so obvious but the last thing I thought was that it would prevent colorista from doing its job.
Also one other interesting observation for Walter.
I noticed that bringing down the whites to 95% (as you recommend in fcp since a hardware scope will read it as 100%)
then bringing the rendered clip back in, interestingly enough showed as just a hair below 100% on the fcp scopes.
