  EDL Fun! – SD offline – HD transfer – SD finish

  I’m having trouble wrapping my brain around this. Any help is appreciated.

  Our project was shot in 23.98 HD. We are offlining with down-converted SD 29.97 material. We will final transfer from the original 23.98 HD masters, and then online in SD @ 29.97 (We will down-convert the final CC footage during transfer for cost concerns).

  So where I’m hung-up is my transfer session. If I spit out a transfer EDL from my 29.97 project, will my timecode match the 23.98 HD master?

  I just don’t want any craziness at the transfer involving timecode mis-match.

  Cinema Tools. Export -> converted EDL. it will convert 30 to 24, and 24 to 30.

  Thanks for the response.

  I know that cinema tools can convert my EDL, but I guess my real question is if the conversion is even necessary for my transfer?

  I mean, should I treat this any differently than if I was going to a film transfer after working with 29.97 dailies? I never had to do any conversions for those transfer sessions.

  Sorry if this is any easy/stupid question…or if I’m just over-thinking the issue. Sadly, I don’t have much experience with HD, let alone working off of down-converts that will go back to the source.

  This is tough to tackle because I have never heard of just a workflow, so I wouldn’t know how to approach it.

  Offline edit at 29.97, then have an EDL from that reflect the 23.98 material to then be transferred to SD….just the selects…that will then be edited in SD? I’ve never done such a thing…I don’t know who has, so that is why it is puzzling a lot of us.

  I have edited 29.97 for footage that was 23.98 HD dubbed to DVCAM. And yes, I converted the EDL in CInema Tools and all was good. But the online was done on the HD masters.

  I think that you need to get ALL the footage transferred to SD (digibeta) and then try to do the online with the 29.97 EDL. But, you have to make DARN SURE the TC is good.

  Oh wait, you’re saying the original material is on HD tapes? So what’s this “transfer” you’re speaking about? A coloring session of the HD selects to digibeta?

  If their telecine system wants an EDL for a tape-to-tape transfer, then yes, turn a 30fps edl into 24fps. But if they just want a paper list, then you can give them a 30fps list and they’ll color with handles.

  since hours:min:secs are always equivalent in 24 or 30fps, you only really need to worry about precision when you’re doing a final conform and the :frames are numbered differently.

  Sorry, I wasn’t clear earlier about the transfer session. Yes, the transfer session is for final color, so it will only involve selects in the cut.

  The only HD hitch I have in this entire workflow is at the final transfer session. We are offlining in SD using DVCam down-converts, and we’ll online/conform/finish in SD. To do the final color correction, we will (obviously) use the source HD footage and down-convert the final color to DigiBeta.

  It sounds like I may need to convert my EDL for the tape-to-tape, but I’ll definitely call the transfer house before hand to see what they want to do.
