Walter or Shane 1 PVM-14L5 Question
There seems to be some confusion about what it takes to get an HD signal into the PVM-14L5 series.
1. Some say it works on analog component with an HD option card installed.
2. and some say they ALL do HD WITHOUT an option card inserted and will take an HD component analog signal on the built in BNC connectors. (though you need an option card for HD-SDI)
Can either of you tell me which one is true?
I’ve located a few of them and I just want to be sure I get one that can do component HD since the HD-SDI is kinda rare and very spendy.

Well, first lemme start by saying that my model number is PVM-14L5…no /1. OK.
Now, right away…off the shelf…it does HD. It is called a MULTIFORMAT monitor….SD and HD. I send an HD signal via component to the component ins on the monitor. The monitor detects what sortof signal is being sent and switched accordingly. If I have the Kona LH downconvert HD to SD, or play out DV, the Monitor displays 720×486. If I send out a DVCPRO HD signal, it switches to 720p mode.
When I first bought this monitor, I also bought the HD SDI card for it….but I didn’t need to. In fact, I recently sold it and have been using the component ins JUST fine.
Nice that you found a few…these are hard to come by.

so your non /1 does 48hz anyways? Well then…..

Again, some of the models don’t say /1 on it. If it was manufactured after a certain date, it’s a /1 even though you won’t find it on the outside of the monitor. I cannot for the life of me find the information though.

thats alright if its a /1 or not.
I won’t be using the 24psf mode anyways.
I’ll just be happy to have HD over component to a CRT.

Wrong. It autoswitches to HD when it receives an HD signal.

Wrong again. SD and HD via Component. Auto switches. No HD-SDI card needed.

Yeah, both of ours just say L5 but the /1 designation was on some of the paperwork I believe.

The 14L5/1 “1” indicates it can do multiformat such as 48hz for 24psf as well as,50i, 60i and 720P.
The older series without the “1” cannot do 48hz and I would not recommend buying them if you intend to use the monitor long term and there is the chance you will deal in the future with 24P material.
For a post production suite using the component analog inputs is fine but in the field all the high end HD cameras use HD-SDI (ie F900, Varicam etc) and it is much easier to deal with a single cable instead of three from a streamlined workflow perspective.
If however you are using the hdx-200 camera and do not have HD-SDI outputs then using the component inputs will do.
The best monitor for the value if you can find it is the 20L5/1.

I only need it for accurate HD color correction purposes.
While the 48hz mode would be nice, It won’t be a deal breaker for me (we’ve never done any 24psf work and don’t own HDCAM decks) since we’d rent a 24psf display if that ever became an absolute necessity.
