  • EDL Conversion Issue – 30fps-24fps

Posted by Alex Barreto on October 18, 2007 at 3:47 pm

We have a 30fps EDL that we need to convert to 24fps for some HD graphics work. The footage was shot on a Varicam at 24fps. The offline was done at 30fps using timecode matched downconverted footage. The EDL is a CMX-3600 EDL from a Sony XPRI system. I’ve tried doing an EDL conversion using Cinema Tools but when I try using the File | Export | Converted EDL | 24 FPS from 30 FPS function, the 30fps EDL I need is not a choosable file. What would be the proper workflow for this to function? And does anything need to be done to the EDL prior to bringing it into FCP/Cinema Tools?

[Alex Barreto] “the 30fps EDL I need is not a choosable file”

It should be. Is it named “.edl” at the end?

It does have “.edl” at the end. I tried removing the file extension just in case but that made no difference.

Sorry, I don’t know what the problem is. Maybe try exporting the EDL again.

Actually I’m not able to convert ANY edl file made outside of FCP. A little more background: Several months ago I tried this very workflow on the previous version of Final Cut Studio and it worked just fine. Now I’m trying what I believe to be the same steps in Final Cut Studio 2 and it is not working. I was wondering if perhaps there was a step I was leaving out. When I open the EDL in TextEdit it looks exactly as it should look. Could there be something in a setup menu that’s missing?

I’ve tried importing the EDL directly into FCP and it crashes the application.
