    Hi all,
Just got a few of the above monitors to try as 2nd displays with fcp. The image on component in looks a long way off quality and colour wise, DVI in seems fine, less banding on fade to blacks etc.. but the colour again is to wack compared to the cinema display.

Is everyone using them factory defalt then calibrating? and using component in ?

Any suggestions on settings/calibration would be great.

    cheers

Boy, I sure would like to hear an answer to this too, I have one backordered 3 weeks from Dell which I bought for the same purpose. Plus, I’d like to know if it has modes for SD as well, something I couldn’t find out on their Website. If it sucks for this, I’m gonna cancel my order.

    Have a wonderful day.

SD will most likely not look good on this monitor. I have yet to see a low cost LCD that can handle SD well.

Our panasonic plasmas don’t even display SD all that well.

I use component in sometimes and monitor off my Kona, when I have a producer behind me and I need a big screen. I had to make a few adjustments (there are menu options), but I can’t get it to look too terribly close to my HD CRT. But it is fine enough as a reference monitor.

SD sent to this monitor looks like crap…so don’t do it. I have used the Matrox MXO with this and got better results, but I like the MXO on the ACD better. You might get a good picture with the AJA HDP or Decklink HD Link. I was able to get a decent pic with the HDP.

Oh, I have the 2405, not the 2407.

but of all the flat panels out there, plasma does the best 🙂

I just ordered one of those Dells as well and it says it won’t arrive til november 11. must be in high demand.

as for monitoring, I used a 2407 before we got the plasma for our “big” display. and I can tell you it does a much better job when you feed it over DVI-D with a blackmagic or aja output.

There in the device you can make adjustments to get it very close to your crt.

    Hey Shane,

I bailed on my purchase, and just for grins yesterday afternoon I lugged our LC-32D7U Sharp Aquos 32″ 720p TV upstairs to the studio to see what it would do as a client reference monitor. I gotta tell ya, I was blown away. Hooked it up via component, and aside from having to use the remote to select pillarbox or widescreen, the dang thing senses what’s coming in and tells you (for instance, when I sent it SD from an FCP timeline, it put up 480i in the corner for a few seconds, likewise when I sent 1080i), and everything I sent it just looked brilliant. Fantastic I should say. HD, SD everything.

It has a boatload of color and gamma controls, with which I was able to get REALLY close to what I see on the NTSC monitor. Just incredible. My only gripe is since I bought it two years ago, it’s price has cut in half! You can get these (or the latest incarnations) for around 1000 bucks or so.

I was thinking about Walter’s suggestion for the Panny plasmas, but since he says SD looks bad on them and looks great on this, guess my choice? Amazing.

    Have a wonderful day.

Good for you. Yeah, the Dells really should be used as Computer monitors….but they CAN be used as reference monitors. I do on occasion via component, but the image isn’t all that great unless I use the MXO.

Are you still enjoying your Aquos? I have a 46″ at my house and love it. I’m considering pulling the trigger on purchasing them for my edit rooms as a client monitor.
