  Sony HDR FX1E shooting DV or HDV

  Hello there,

  Ive got this Sony HDR FX1E orderd for a shoot next week that can film in dv or hdv.

  The project for next week was ment to be for only on web, for that i mostly use a dv camera. Now they suggest to make a dvd of it, so i gess i could use the hdv option.

  I never ever shot anything on hdv, so i dont know realy what and how.

  My biggest question is still. Is Hdv much better then dv?
  Probelbly YES, but most of the people(and im sure the client) dont have a HDTV. So why shoot it?
  What if i burn it to HD DVD, can people watch it on a normal dvd player?

  Anyone can give me a quick introduction?The good and the bads?

  What you talkin’ a bowt , Sucka!! (sorry – could resist the Mister T reference!)

  All of our ads are now shot on Hidef, even though the finished product is edited and transmitted using standard def. The images look superb.

  I also use a Sony Z1E HDV camcorder to shoot the odd packshot if i’m not happy with the one that was shot in studio. I shoot this in HDV, import it into FCP via the firewire, then i export the material into 10bit uncompressed (which is my edit format of choice). The images hold up really well alongside the much more expensive full HD sourced material.

  I would certainly shoot in HDV as this will give you more options further down the line. I don’t know what options are available on the camera you are getting but i would certainly recommend you try find out how to set the camera up properly. MIne looked average at best until i discovered an article in a magazine (Macvideo – issue 2 may 2006) which described how to set up the Z1 – now it looks fantastic!
