“This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of final cut pro” is the error I get. I know this is somewhat of a repost, and I apologize, but I’ve looked through the other threads about this:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/952840

    and

    https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/936409

And I have tried everyones troubleshooting methods and nothing seems to work.

Obviously I started with the trashing the preferences…I even got rid of my render files. I then moved on to trying to open the program with my scratch disk NOT hooked up, but it still won’t open leading me to believe it may be a bigger problem.

There’s not a TON of work that I’ve lost and if I could re-link and isolate the problem I would do so, but I can’t even get in to the actual file.

Also, I JUST got this computer a few days ago..so I don’t know if that info helps at all…software updates etc and whatnot..dunno if that plays into it.

Any suggestions or help is much appreciated! Thanks!

Are you trying to open the file on the same system it would started on? With the same version of FCP?

That is normally a problem with a corrupt project file and not the media. Do you have another system or know someone else that can try to open it. They do not need the media to open the file. That way you will know if it is our system (I think it is) or the file.

I started working on the project on my old mac (G4 Quicksilver), but have since worked on it on this new system (Mac Pro), for a few days. I can try opening it up on my old computer and get back to you.

Let’s say it is not the media, but is a corrupt file. Is there any course of action I should take?

Also, this happened directly after a crash of Final Cut.

    Thanks so much!

Try opening one of the auto save project files or if you have a backup project files. I’m pretty sure it is not your media files and is your project files.

I get “lazy” and do not back up projects all the time, this is a remind to us all. Hopefully a auto save file will get you to a point where you have not lost too much of the new edits.

This is also a helpful this to post up front. 🙂

One other question, you can start new projects and open other old ones?

I actually didn’t have an autosave set for this! whoops. I know, i know…..i had turned it off just briefly for a separate project and when I set this one up, I completely forgot to set it back on, so there is none. i am an idiot.

And yes, I have no problem opening other files or starting new files.

One other brief piece of info (no idea if this is worthy of mentioning, but I’m throwing it out there):

When I transferred all my docs, files, applications etc to my new computer, before opening final cut I had to upgrade to a newer version of quicktime before it would let me work. That seemed weird…?

    Thanks again for any/all help!

[PaulBC] “I started working on the project on my old mac (G4 Quicksilver), but have since worked on it on this new system (Mac Pro), for a few days.”

Which version of FCP is on the G4? Which version is on the Mac Pro? Are they the same version? If not, that’s your problem.

So you have a copy of the project on your G4 still? Simply archive the project (right click on it and choose “create archive of” and transfer the resulting .zip file to the mac pro. Or open the file on your g4, make sure everything is deselected and export an XML v3 of the project and transfer that XML to the MacPro.

I just had the same problem but solved it pretty quickly and easily. I think it was caused by not properly shutting down the entire system before doing anything with my external firewire box (canopus box). To solve this I shut down the computer, unplugged all firewire devices (external drives & canopus box) then restarted the computer while resetting the P-Ram.

    – to reset P-Ram hold down the P,R, Command, & Option key all at once while restarting the computer. Wait for the computer to make the startup BONG sound at least 3 times before letting go of the 4 keys.

Once I had reset the P-Ram I trashed the Power Management P-List File. You can find this file here.

MAC HD -> Library -> Preferences -> System Configuration -> Power Management P-list file

After that was trashed I emptied the trash, shut down the computer, plugged my firewire devices back in and started up normally. Everything works fine after that.

    Hope this helps,
    Pete
