New Magic Bullet A Color-Killer?
Have any of you guys seen this new Magic Bullet Grading software about to released?

Definitely the “Motion” approach to color grading. Just like I said in the Color Forum recently. “Want that Miami Vice Look? Just click on the “Miami Vice” Look.
You definitely don’t need to learn color grading or understand anything about color grading to use it. Just click the looks and you’re done.
On the one hand, this is an easy tool to use. On the other hand, a lot of folks aren’t going to learn anything more than clicking on a look. But it will definitely be a bit fast, though the only thing I wonder is how fast will it render. Colorista renders very quickly and I see that the Power Mask feature from that tool is in there.
It will be great to see how this performs once it is out for the public.

Of course one other note, my DVD on Color is being released I believe this week and it is actually a very easy software to use. You can save and share “looks” very easily as well. Doesn’t work right inside FCP like this does, but Color really isn’t that scary. 🙂

given the pricepoint of Color i’d think that Color is already the Color for the rest of us 🙂
but yes, cost notwithstanding, this does seem very accessible.
imho the multiple presets paradigm is not to somehw a “bad thing” although i dare say some users might never stray beyiond them (probably the same users that download it from bittorent). rather than obfuscate the learning process presets allow quite the opposite. letting users analyse the composite parts that make up a color grade so as to better understand thise parts and how they work together to create a whole.just my 2c

It looks like a very flexible and powerful tool, once you go beyond the basic pre-sets. The drag & drop simplicity will make it attractive to many people- expect to see many badly applied pre-canned looks on low budget fare in the near future.
Some things this tutorial didn’t cover though. Can you see the output live on your video monitor? Do all the masks have to be circular? Can they be elliptical or rectangular? Can I select by a range of chroma or luma? How do I keyframe the position, size & feather of masks?

In the package there is a CC application (Colorista) and MagicBullet that is basically a serie of presets and MisFire that are cinematographic effects (Vignete, Scratches, Flicker, etc).
The presets, as Andy says, are quite good and if you play with the sliders a little bit you can get incredible results.
The mask in Colorista can be rectangular or oval. Its have two point that you can animate the same than the rest of the parameters, just keyframing. You can not select a range of chroma or luma in Colorista, as you can do with the FCs 3W-CC. And, at least in my old G5 and in my new PowerBookPro, you need to render to see what you get. However in my MacBook renders are fast because MagicBullet is GPU based.
I’ve spent the whole week-end playing with Color. As I sayd yesterday to Walter in the Color forum, when Color will be better integrated with FC, will have not rival. At the moment I will keep with Colorista because I can do everything at once in FC. When you work (as I do) with DV , I think is important to render the minimum number of times possible.

Yes, you should if you use it within FCP. it’s just another effect at that point. Colorista works live.

Yes, they can be circular or rectangular and modified from their original shapes.

The masks in Colorista have two points and you simply keyframe the position of those points to change the position. I do this all the time. You can also key frame the feather if you’d like in Colorista. Since the Power Mask is from Colorista, these controls should transfer.

Not because its better…..
Not because its easy to use….But because it might actually work.
I am comfortable with the tools in color , but:
The amount of crashes and problems make it, for the time being, useless for me. Primarily because I am constantly worried about the fact that it might crash… oh and yeah, Im in PAL land……
