OT: super long DVI run
Posted by Aaron Neitz on October 1, 2007 at 4:01 pmI know the Gefen products will work great for a 75′ run of DVI (either fiber optic cable or DVI booster) but has anyone used products from a less expensive company? running 2 DVI monitors at this length is going to cost $2000… ouch.

October 1, 2007 at 4:09 pmFor a straight DVI cable, I have nothing that works over 35′ and I tried a whole bunch of cables. I have a pair of 35′ cables that work just fine, about $350 or so for the pair.
We tried a whole myriad of products for our 75′ run and nothing worked except the Gefen units. About $1,500 to run the two monitors and USB connection, but it does work and it’s the only thing I’ve found that truly works.
We have the Gefen 5500 unit.

October 1, 2007 at 4:48 pmWe use Gefen also. But we did have two of the fibre cables go out on us after a year:(
We’re looking to replace them with the ethernet cable extenders.

That’s what our 5500 unit is. No fibre cables, just cheap Cat-5.

October 1, 2007 at 5:04 pmAfter having two fibre cables go bad, I totally thing the 5500 is the way to go. Plus you can customize the length. It’s so nice not having our noisy towers in the edit bays!

October 1, 2007 at 5:51 pmFor the premium price you’re paying for fiber cables…. they should NEVER go bad! I’d be pretty torqued.
Will look into the 5500’s, thanks!

October 1, 2007 at 8:17 pmCan I ask what brand you were using? The Gefen maybe???
We just bought a new Flame system…. and autodesk set us up with an Avenview fiber DVI cable. It’s working great, and I tend to assume autodesk does their homework when buying peripherals for premier systems.
