Red “effect failed to render” problem
Posted by David Bogie on September 28, 2007 at 5:38 pmSeekers,
All of a sudden I get this disturbing screen of death when I apply any of most (but not all) FxPlug effects or Generators in FCP.
I’d really appreciate it if anyone could just take a second and try to create a Cellular or Caustics generator clip and report if you get a red screen with text saying “The effect”caustics” failed to render.” If you don’t get that screen, no reason to post.
This is really freaking me out.
thanks,

September 28, 2007 at 6:02 pmWhich CPU & graphics card are you using? Which version of FCP?

November 10, 2007 at 9:54 amThe error message appears when your graphics card isn’t powerful enough to render the effect, which is why you’re only seeing it on some FxPlugs and not others.

February 9, 2008 at 6:32 pmHi,
I just bought a 2.8 8 core Pro Mac and I’m having the same issue with some fxplug plugins displaying the “The effect “…” failed to render.”
My previous G5 dual 2.3 also had the same issue. I believe it has to do with having 2 video cards because when I took out one video card from my G5 to run only 2 monitors, I did not have these conflicts. I have not tried taking one of my ATI Radeon HD 2600 out on the Pro Mac yet, but I will later today.
I would find it surprising that it’s the video card not being powerful enough…
Very strange indeed… Anyone with an explanation?

March 7, 2008 at 9:10 pmOddly enough, I’ve just started getting these same warnings, but on sequences where the effects have been edited in and were previously working.
Recently, we’ve added a new graphics card (NVDIA GeForce 7300 GT)so that we could add a third monitor, but the card is the same as the card already in the Mac Pro. Would this new card cause this problem?

March 7, 2008 at 9:32 pmHi,
I am fairly convinced that the problem is due to the second video card. If you take it out, your problems should disappear. I since returned my second video card to my Mac dealer so I can’t test it with the new OS 10.5.2 update. Have you updated to OS 10.5.2? I believe this was a major update that is supposed to fix some graphics errors. Maybe it fixes the FCP plug-ins issue. Let me know.
I can tell you I have posted this bug on a few boards and no one seems to have an answer to this weird issue.
Thanks, JL

March 10, 2008 at 6:47 pmWe haven’t upgraded yet to OS 10.5.2. I’m hoping that will clear up the issue. If that doesn’t work, you’d suggest having the new video card looked at?
Thank you

March 10, 2008 at 7:21 pmHi,
I think it’s a software issue and has nothing to do with the video card, but I am not an expert. Keep me posted on the results when you upgrade to OS 10.5.2.
Thanks,
JL

March 12, 2008 at 10:36 amHey, I found this thread on Google while searching for information about this problem, and I figured I’d post what I’ve come up with in case it helps anyone.
This happened to me recently, and after searching around online, I found that one thing I had in common with other people experiencing this issue is that we’d all recently added a second video card. In my case it was a second card to accommodate a Wacom Cintiq display tablet. The second video card seems to be the issue – it must be a bug in FCP. For me, all I needed to do was unhook my display from the second card and restart FCP, and suddenly the effects rendered just fine. Give that a shot, and please report this to Apple so hopefully they’ll address it in their next FCP update.

August 20, 2008 at 12:58 amI have a new MacPro with two 2.8GHz Quad-Cores, 8G RAM, current FCS2, one ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT running 2 Cinema 23s and most FXplug-ins don’t render. Has anyone found a solution?
John
