Is it possible to….
quick question….
when i hit ctrl-v to make a cut, the left hand side of the edit is automatically selected. Is there a way to set FCP so that it selects the right hand side everytime?

Neither side of the cut should be selected after hitting control-v.

Really? Never on mine. Try deselecting all before making the cut.

ahh yes – i forgot to say when a clip is selected .
Same question holds true though….if i edit a selected clip, can i tell FCP to selected the right hand product of the edit instead of the left?
I find i trim more from the ends of clips than i do the front and so to change this behaviour will save me a whole heap of button pushes and keystrokes.

I see what you are saying now. If you need to select the right side of the edit, hit control-v for the cut, v to select the cut, then u to toggle the right side. So the sequence would be control-v, v, u.

hmmmm…useful, but not quite what i need.
I am probably inaccurate with my terminology. When i say i i “trim” i suppose i should have said lop off. My editing technique is probably a bit dated – i tend to make a cut, select the crap and hit delete. I want FCP to select the right hand bit of the edit and not the left, thereby letting me hit delete without having to reselect every single time.
I tried your method Jeremy, and found that it selects whichever side of the editpoint but it doesn’t actually select the clip.
Is there an equivalent to hitting A or S in Protools? That is really useful – they simply trim the clip either from the head or tail of the clip. One keystroke and the task is done. I have tried looking but i get lost under the mass of options in FCP.

After you’ve made the cut, press X to mark the clip on the right and then press delete.

I think you need to add an option-a after that x to select ‘in to out’.
so, control-v, x, option-a.
Remember you can remap keyboard shortcuts VERY easily within Final cut, so if option-a isn’t working for you, remap it to an unused key.

Yes absolutely, if the original clip was selected before Ctrl-Ving but there’s no need to select the clip in the first place. With no clip selected, Ctrl-V uses the auto select buttons to work out which clip(s) to add edits to.
