outputting HD to a Beta deck
Posted by Andres Baez on September 16, 2007 at 4:34 amI’m having trouble trying to output HD to a Beta deck. I use edit to tape feature but when I playback what I put on tape the quality is a bit different. I know that would be normal but whats the best way to do it so I dont loose so much quality.
The quiktime movie I’m trying to output I have it in two different formats (I have been using the “Apple Pro Res422”) But I also could use the other one I have “DVCPRO HD”. And also, what settings shoul I put in the sequence I create to output the clip?Help please,,,

September 16, 2007 at 3:29 pmYou’re saying that the quality of the SD output doesn’t match your HD original? Like, it’s not as sharp, perhaps? Well, that’s because it’s not HD.
You don’t say how you’re downconverting. Hardware conversion through something like an Aja Kona card would be better quality than most software conversion.

September 16, 2007 at 5:44 pmThe capture card I’m using is a Blackmagic Extreme card ( it is not an HD card ) And the deck I’m using is Sony PVW-2800. I’m editing in Final Cut Pro 6. I know is not going to look the same as the HD source. But I’m sure there’s something else I should do so it looks better. It’s something about the pixels because for example the closeups of the people in the image, when you see their face (the chick area doesn’t look smooth, it looks more like tiny squares. And also the in the bakckground of the picture (the clip content) there’s a lot of blue for some shots and a lot of red in others and you can also see weird pixels. The background of the video doesn’t look as clean and smooth like in the HD material. As of now I have been using the quicktime with the Apple Pro Res422 codec. I dont know if its gonna make a difference if I use in the sequence the other quicktime movie (DVCPRO HD). If this is impossible, is there any of you in the Los Angeles area that could put this clips into a sequence for tomorrow monday. And how much can this cost?
thanks everybody. -

September 16, 2007 at 5:47 pmIt’s a Blackmagic extreme card. And I’m using the component inputs cause I,m using a Betacam SP deck (PVW-2800). How do I set it up to do the realtime downconversion? I think I was doing it right but I really dont know.

your only option is to drop the HD timeline into an SD timeline and render. This should come out clean. Not as clean as hardware conversion, but should still be clean.

September 16, 2007 at 6:27 pmYou mean dropping the HD quicktime movie into a SD timeline ? I could do that but what settings should I use for that SD timeline ? I’m gonna create it and the I’m going to Sequence settings and there are a lot of options : I think here is where I should be very carefull:
– what Frame size ? Aspect Rsadio ?
– Pixel Aspect Radio ?
– Field Dominance ?
– Editing Timebase ?
– Quicktime video settings/ Compressor ?
Is there any website where I can learn more about working with HD in Final Cut Pro ?
thanks

September 16, 2007 at 6:50 pmWalter is right the only other thing that you may be able to do is convert the file to 10bit sd in compressor then play it out.
are you yousing a raid? in theory 10bit sd should run of an internal HD

September 16, 2007 at 10:08 pmThe main HD quicktime clips I have them in the internal hard drive. I’m going to try to make it a 10bit to see what happens… Is it 10bit only or 10bit uncompressed?

September 16, 2007 at 10:39 pmOk here is the deal.. I used compressor and when I put the new 10bit uncompressed clip into a new sequence it squeezes the video to fit the 4:3 ratio. Is there any way (cause this is a music video) I could just keep the 16×9 format ? I dont mind the black bars at the botton and top of the video. I did try modifying the sequence settings and clicked on the anamorphic option but that changed it in my final cut Canvas window but didn’t change at all in my output monitor..
