  • Using After Effects filters/plug-ins in FCP? Details instructions?

I heard a while ago that it’s possible to use After Effects plug-ins/filters within Final Cut Pro. Does anybody actually do this? Do *all* filters work? If not, how can I tell which will and which won’t? How do I get my FCP to use my AFX plug-ins/filters?

    Phill,

Some work, some don’t. Most suppliers will tell you which work in both, after that it’s just try and see.

A couple years back I threw Shine into FCP to see if it would work, and it does, but it’s really slow. Right now there are so many accelerated plugs for FCP there’s not much reason to worry about your AE plugs, except for the major ones like Boris Continuum and Sapphire, but truthfully, I don’t think FCP can beat AE’s subpixel performance, scaling etc., so why even bother?

    Have a wonderful day.

This depends partly on which version of FCP you have. Later versions that use the new FX Plug architecture seem to be less compatable with AE filters than previous versions. I know that Shine & Starglow from Trapcode worked in FCP 3, 4 & 5.0.x, but no longer seem to work in 5.1.x.
