I’m wondering how best to plug in and out of my mackie 1202 simply for monitoring audio from FCP. Currently, my setup is as follows:

    1. FCP 5.1 audio out through Decklink HD Pro
    2. Decklink HD Pro audio out through digital AES cable to Behringer Ultramatch Pro converter
    3. Behringer converter analog XLR out to Mackie 1202
    4. Mackie 1202 out to powered KRK Rokit 5 speakers

Now, currently I have the left XLR cable from the Behringer plugged into the LINE IN 1 (1/4″) on the Mackie, and the right XLR cable from the Behringer plugged into the LINE IN 2 (1/4″) on the Mackie. Then I have 1/4″ TRS cables running from the MAIN OUT L/R outputs on the Mackie out to my powered KRK speakers.

Is this set-up correct? Or should I be using the LINE IN 5-6 inputs and the CONTROL ROOM outputs? If anyone can a detailed description of how to wire up this Mackie it would be greatly appreciated. Just need it for correctly monitoring FCP audio for now…

    Thanks.

You use Control Room outputs for your speakers. This allows you to use the volume (Control Room Submix) control for your speakers.

Main Out is for your record devices and is controlled by the Main Mix Control. You never want to use Main Mix for your speakers because then you have no idea what your levels are on the Mackie.

Alright, thanks Walter. And one more question on configuring this thing:

I have the gain knobs for LINE INs 1+2 set to 0. Then I have the PRE FADER SOLO buttons selected for LINE INs 1+2, but the level meter is only lighting up on the right side? Is this the correct configuration?

    Thanks.

[odysseus ming] “I have the gain knobs for LINE INs 1+2 set to 0.”

Gain should be set to U (unity)

[odysseus ming] “Then I have the PRE FADER SOLO buttons selected for LINE INs 1+2, but the level meter is only lighting up on the right side?”

I don’t use the Solo buttons for anything. I control what I hear by simply using the level controls on each channel.

I’ve got to be doing something wrong then, because if I don’t have the PRE-FADER SOLO buttons selected, I can’t hear anything. No levels in the meter, and no sound…I’ve read the whole manual and can’t seem to figure it out.

I just re-read your original post. You say XLR out of the Beheringer to XLR in on the Mackie. XLR on Inputs 1 – 4 are Mic Inputs, not Line Inputs. You need an XLR to 1/4″ Adapter to bring the audio in via 1/4″

Sorry, I missed that the first time.

I am coming in through the 1/4″ plugs in lines 1+2 (sorry, that’s my mistake I didn’t make it clearer – I have XLR to 1/4″ cables coming from Behringer to Mackie).

Should something be selected in the “CONTROL ROOM SOURCE” box over by the meters?

The Mackie site has a lot of great info. Check out the hookup guide and the owners manuals. They include dia grams on the proper way to hook up components and expalin is clear language technical audio terms.
