Does anyone know if there is a program that does a good job of simulating ink being dropped into water?

    Thanks in advance.

[Dan Humphrey] “Does anyone know if there is a program that does a good job of simulating ink being dropped into water?”

It’s called zoology store, the button you are looking for is called aquarium or watertank. ;o) In all seriousness, shoot it. Unless you need something extremely extravagant like the dancing orange juice from Aardmann animation, there is little or no point of even remotely thinking of messing with fluid dynamics. Lerning a 3D program alone would be much more complex and expensive than setting up a simple shoot (even if you have to buy the props and rent a camera).

probably something like realflow that is VERY EXPENSIVE.

Why don’t you setup a small fishtank, and film it yourself, should be the cheapest.

Or head over to http://www.istockphoto.com, they have stock video of ink in water you can buy cheap enough.

Most of the stuff you see on TV is ink in water…light from behind or one side.

Can it wait a little? Say, March 12th?

    Check this out: https://www.videocopilot.net/riotgear.html

Other than that, just like they said; shoot it yourself.

    Thanks,

I’d use Trapcode Particular. Never, ever as good as footage but for a few seconds it can pass.

Thanks for the replies. I kinda figured it would be best to shoot it. I was just hoping to avoid the fill the tank, shoot the tank, empty the tank, fill the tank, shoot the tank, empty the tank, fill the tank, shoot the tank, empty the tank………. =)

    > I was just hoping to avoid the fill the tank, shoot the tank, empty the tank, fill the tank, shoot the tank, empty the tank, fill the tank, shoot the tank, empty the tank………. =)< Actually, this is going to take much less time than trying get a simulation to look good enough to sell the effect. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    Hello,
They’re from a music library by a guy called Bjorn Lynne. Good Stuff. I added the water sounds and the extra explosions for punch. https://www.videocopilot.net/riotgear.html

One tip for filming the fish tanks is to stir the water after each drop and you can add more without cleaning the tank. Just only do it a couple of times and you may need to increase the exposure for the decreased light. And make sure the water is perfectly calm so wait a few minutes as well.

    Good Luck,
    Andrew Kramer

PS, Thanks to everyone that ordered Riot Gear, I hope you enjoy it.

A great source for this type of stuff is istockphoto.com and you can’t beat th price per clip.
