As a new HD user I am encountering a number of issues editing DVC Pro HD shot on an HVX 200, in FCP 5. The 2 issues right now are real time playback without rendering, can’t do it in the timeline and every time I bring a clip into the timeline it needs to be rendered to play back and why is the canvas showing a smaller window than the viewer, I get a large 16 x 9 in the viewer but the canvas is small letterbox, and why is the image resolution so poor after I render?? I know, that’s 3 questions… Am I an idiot or what???? RM

[envirodiver] “The 2 issues right now are real time playback without rendering, can’t do it in the timeline and every time I bring a clip into the timeline it needs to be rendered to play back”

Your Sequence Settings don’t match your clip settings. these need to match for proper playback.

A good rule is to run the easy setup each time you start a new project to avoid such issues.

Then enlighten me. I ran the easy set up which gave me the option of 720/30 and I shot at 24p so is that what is causing the problem. There is no 720/24p option. Do I have to do a custom set up?? RM

[Cow News Droid] “. There is no 720/24p option. Do I have to do a custom set up?? RM”

Sure there is. It’s called DVCPro HD 720/24. If you shot 24, you need to set up in that Easy Setup and ensure that timeline is setup the same.

Ok, so I did an easy set up at 720/24p and I still get a timeline that requires me to render before I can play. I just don’t get it. I will try a new project and see what happens but none of this seems to work. Is there any blog or forum that really goes through the steps of using this technology, that an idiot can understand……?

As has already been mentioned: check your timeline settings. Click in the timeline to make it active then press Command + 0 (the zero key) to open up the timeline options. Make sure the timeline settings match your footage setting (i.e. 24p 16×9, etc). This should end your problem. If your timeline doesn’t match your clip settings you will always have to render the timeline.

    Good Luck,

    Nate

Thanks but still no luck. I am running out of options here and this just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Nate: What you wrote worked but not until I created a new sequence so thanks a lot. Now what do you know about working with PN as compared to just 24p and final cut….. Rick Morris

I forgot to mention that you would have to delete the clips from the timeline before adjusting the timeline settings but starting with a new sequence is just the same.

I’m sorry but I don’t have any knowledge of PN. Quite frankly, I don’t even know what it is.

PS–sorry for the long reply, I’ve been out of town for a few days.
