  • creating a letterboxed DVD from FCP

    Hello,

I need to create a 16:9 ratio DVD from a standard 4:3 DV NTSC video. What I’m doing is:

    1. Exporting the video from FCP using Compressor to a default DVD 4:3 mode and and then cropping 10% (48 from 480) off of the top and 10% off of the bottom for my letterbox mode.

    2. After bringing the “cropped” file into DVD StudioPro, I set the default display to letterbox and make my DVD.

Does this sound like the best way to proceed? I want to have the DVD play full screen on wide screen monitors and generate letterbox black bars if someone watches on an older 4:3 television set (with of course no distortion).

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

    John

i think you should create a16:9 anamorphic sequence in FCP, put your 4:3 video in, then scale it up to fill the width of the 16:9. (you could use some scaling plug in instead of FCP own motion tab, like red giant instant hd maybe, for bette r scaling results.)
then export the sequence in a 16:9 video.
put it in DVD Studio Pro track and in the attribute panel select Display mode > 16:9 -letterbox

Doing so your video fits a 16:9 screens without distorsions and is letterboxed in 4:3 screens
