audio out of sync in FCP but not quicktime
I have been having a terrible time trying to figure out what has gone wrong.
All footage I digitized was shot with Panasonic AG-DVX100a in advanced mode. I digitized the material at 23.98.
When I click on the quick time file, the video plays without a problem, but when i am watching the clips in FCP 5.1.4 in the viewer or the timeline, the audio lags behind the video about 21 frames.
I tried deleting all my preferences, but to no avail. I imported the clips into other projects that I editing with only just a week ago, and while the other material was fine, these clips were not. Something seems to be wrong with the actual clips, but i’m not sure why they would be in sync in quick time and not in sync in FCP.
I have spent many hours trying to figure out what is the problem, changing the sequence rate etc. Trying to remove the pulldown (which there is none).
When I capture now, the clips are in sync. I have captured hours of footage at this point, is there a solution anyone knows about? I even tried importing the files from a different firewire drive but the same problem. I am running on my mac 10.4.1 2.33 ghz intel core 2 duo, 3GB ram, and have not had a problem like this in the past. Now when i’m under the crunch to finish this edit, the problem seems insurmountable. I am writing from Africa, otherwise I’d get on the phone with FCP.

and the strange thing is I have found exactly 1 clip in my whole project that does not have this problem, that is in sync, but the settings are all the same.

Look at the audio settings in the FCP browser and I’ll bet you wil lfind that it shows a 47.xxxkhz instead of 48.00 khz. This is a problem I’m encountered with material acquired using certain Panasonic cameras. If this is the problem you’re having to, the only solution I found was to run the captured QTs though QT Pro to export new files with the proper audio sample rate at 48.00khz.

It’s funny that you bring this up right now because I am having a similar issue.
I shot in 24PA on the DVX and captured in FCP 6 using 2:3:3:2 pulldown. However, when I dropped the file in the timeline the video and audio did not sync. I simply thought the audio and video were out of sync until I noticed that the person being interviewed was moving at a fast rate. The audio sounded fine and was not out of sync with the image, the image was moving too fast. Of course, it all works perfectly okay when played in Quicktime. I tried all the varying FCP sequence settings and still no luck.
One frustrating aspect of all this is that I recaptured a short two minute segment of the video and it all synced up just fine in FCP, but after three capture attempts on the entire video I was met with the same issue of it being synced in QT but not in FCP. I noticed that when I looked at the video properties in QT that the frame rates for the videos that don’t sync are LESS than 23.98 FPS, but the short video clip FPS is okay at 23.98 FPS.
Based on this information, I exported one of the unsynced videos in QT to 23.98 FPS thinking this would solve the problem. NOPE!
Then, I exported it AGAIN in QT to 29.97 FPS and now it works fine is FCP using the standard 29.97 DV sequence preset. However, I consider this a temporary fix. I really don’t want to have to go through the extra step in exporting the captured footage in QT.
So, if there is anyone out there with a solution that doesn’t involve this extra step, I’m all ears.

I certainly feel better knowing i’m not the only one with this issue. I checked the audio settings but it was 48.
So what i ended up doing was trying to make all my clips offline (deleting them from my drive…because now my drive was not allowing me to delete them), and the redigitizing all of it 29.97.
Once I redigitized them as 29.97 in a regular sequence it worked fine. When i tried to do the pulldown removal it worked on one clip and that worked in a 23.98 sequence, but somehow when i processed a few more clips they magically went offline and wouldn’t reconnect. Seems to be some sort of bug, or maybe my camera no longer has perfect timing (but the strange thing still is that the QTs always play perfectly). So it must be some bug in FCP i guess.
So my only solution for you now is make your clips offline, delete the files, and redigitize with capture settings at 29.97 and edit in 29.97.

Your solution seems like more work than mine. Either way, it’s annoying and time-consuming. Have you checked the Apple forums yet?

hey guys,
I’ve been dealing with this issue for quite some time with this camera and workflow in different incarnations. sometimes the clips have come in at 29.97 in fcp but look okay in quicktime. sometimes they’re out of sync in fcp and not in quicktime. what you have to do, and it works everytime… should have done this instead reinstall fcp countless times… IS open it in QT PRO and step back a few seconds and set an out marker, then trim to selection and save as new copy. import into fcp and magic!
