I just got a Maxtor III 1tb HD for my intel macbook pro. Material is captured from a mini dv cam and stored at dv quality.
the Maxtor freezes if I walk away, log clips for a long period of time(mini Dv) or use another program while both FCP is open and the HD is on and connected.
When I unplug the drive I loose the spinning ball so Im able to save my work. but then the drive wont start up until a couple of tries turning it off/on.

Any Idea what is causing this and what a solution might be?

    Thanks
    Derek

Most likely your drive is falling asleep.

    System Preferences > Energy Settings

Turn OFF the switch “Put Hard drive to Sleep when possible.”

When I goto the Energy Saver preference I see a box checked that says “PUT HARD DISK TO SLEEP WHEN POSSIBLE” .Will un checking this work for both Internal and external Hard Drives. What I want is to separalty control the Maxtors sleep function .

    Thanks

Why??? You should have this turned off on all drives. Apple recommends turning off all power saving features in the FCP installation manual.
