  • Convert 16:9 to 4:3 WITHOUT letterboxing???

Posted by Ladydisdain on August 24, 2007 at 3:56 pm

OK, my people, question for you …

Is there ANY way in Final Cut to change a 16:9 shot to a 4:3 shot without letterboxing?

My managing editor is convinced he did this once by just unchecking a box, but all of our searching thereafter doesn’t show us an option that will simply turn a 16:9 anamorphic shot into a normal 4:3 aspect shot by changing the sequence or clip settings.

Right now, we’re reduced to letterboxing – but if you know of a way in Final Cut that it can convert without that, I’d love to hear it!

    Thanks!

It’s called a center punch, and you can do it by scaling the letterboxed clip to fit the 4:3 timeline.

Take your 16:9 footage, throw it on a 4:3 timeline. This will make it letterboxed. Now in the sequence, select all, ctrl-click, and select “Remove Attributes”. Check the box for “Basic Motion” but do not check the box for “Distort”.

You may find that the center part of the picture is not always ideal. You can do a pan and scan in the Motion tab by manually shifting the center left or right for various shots.

Just changing the distort settings wont accomplish this…it will just squeeze the picture so it looks wrong, everyone will be thin and tall! Unfortunately you will have to double click the 16:9 clip once it is in the 4:3 timeline and resize to 133. You can then move up and down with the posisiton control to select the bit of the frame you want to see. You will lose a little resolution, if you have the money to do a hardware conversion it will look better.
    cheers
