since many of you have been holding my hand throughout this process of getting our first show out the door, i thought i would share a bit of our success from last week.

in a nutshell, i had shot HDCam (captured it via DVCPro HD codec) and HDV (captured natively), and edited on FCP 6.0.1 on a DVCPro HD timeline. as per the request of the post house, i rendered each of (4) 5 minute segments out to a single file in the HDTV 10bit codec (which i thought was overkill, but as i said, this was recommended by the post house). for “safety”, i had also rendered these out as single DVCPro HD files.

both worked out fine. single files on the timeline, dropped to an HDCam master. voila! this was after a little bit of hoops to jump through in getting to the final product, but it worked.

my question back to the post house (and to ye smart guys here) is, “isn’t it truly overkill to render these puppies to HD 10 bit?”. i would sure think so, but what do i know. each of the 4 single files ends up being right around 50 GB, while a single DVCPro HD file is about 5 GB, and Pro Res was only about 8 GB, but they had trouble with the Pro Res at first.

just trying to see what will be most efficient next time around, but so far we are achieving success! thanks to all of you for you help on this…

(and now back to Shane’s DVD-ROM “Getting Organized in FCP”)

thanks for helping out a bonehead!

    Glad it all worked out.

The 10-bit rendering is for color correction. Better color space. But why they didn’t recapture the HDCAM tapes as 10-bit seems odd…that would result in BETTER quality. But, this way works too.

    Now go get organized.

I totally agree. If you have tape based media, it’s best to recapture @ 10bit from tape. The method they put you through is really convoluted. Think about it. You had HDCam stuff at it’s own compression, then you compressed that down even further to DVCPro HD, then brought in HDV native, but encapsulated it in a DVCPro HD timeline (basically rendered it to DVCPro HD, another compression pass). THEN you took all of those forms of compression and then put it through another round of compression to 10bit (even though this isn’t compressing the footage any further, it’s yet another round of conversion that’s not necessary from footage that’s already had compression damage done to it, twice). Next time, just capture everything to the same codec. If you can manage 10bit Uncompressed, do it, if not go ProResHQ captured form your source tapes, not rendered from other camera native codecs.
