beyond ready for a TURBO CHARGE, BABY!
i have a ton of work to do, and i have sat here for most of the day while this puppy creeps along rendering my 22:15 show (in 4 segments) to 4 single QT files for output tomorrow. amazingly slow…and i know probably the main culprit is that i put a couple 1920 x 1080 Digital Juice backgrounds behind some of my graphic sequences. in the future, i’ll shrink those down, but in the meantime, there must be a few things i can do to speed this puppy up.
i’m currently a G5, with dual 2GHz processors, 4 GB Ram, old graphics card that i will be updating next week (to the ATI x1900 methinks). i have no RAIDs (maybe that is part of the problem?), but have (2) 500 GB eSATA drives (one LaCie and one Seagate), and a 500 GB LaCie FW drive.
i’m open to suggestions….

also, my thread on “single file…” is open to suggestions for workflow as well. learned a lot today, but maybe only really learned that FCP 6 is not consistent in what it renders? i would tend to point the finger more in my direction that at the computer….but who knows…

A nice raid will have SOME effect on performance, but in the case of number crunching, like renders, compressions, exports, anything having to do with transcoding or processing, you have to get a faster machine. I just got an 8 core after waiting this long (upgraded from a Dual 2.0 G5 myself) and it’s a big big difference. Compressor flies on h264s now, and I haven’t even tried compressor 3 yet where you can setup the virtual cluster. I’m still on FCP 5.1.4 and from what I’ve heard and the few short tests that I have done on a separate boot drive, if you can get FCP6 to run right, the rt has been increased throughout the app. If I were you, instead of getting a faster graphics card, I’d opt for faster processors. For now, if you want to save some money on storage, get yourself 3 cost effective internal SATA drives and stripe those together in the computer itself. Make sure you back this raid set up as it’s raid0, but it’ll get you through a compressed HD workflow, no problems. Check the Apple store refurb section often for deals.
I understand that perhaps this might not be in your price range, but it’s really the only way you are going to experience a ‘wow’ in terms of increased speed.

And also that ATI X1900 video card will not fit in your computer, unless it was the only dual 2 GHz made with PCI Express slots in the 2005 timeframe.
