Hi, I’m buying a macbook pro this week to replace my broken powerbook and the guy at apple has given me two options both coming in at about 1750EURO and was wqondering what you guys think is the better deal…

The first is a refurbished (They say its as good as new) Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM, 120GB HD and a 256mb video card.

The second is a brand new Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM, 120GB HD and 128 MB video card.

Considering they both coast the same which is the best investment? Are the new Apple chips a lot faster? Or would the old chip and the extra graphics power suit me better? I use FCP mainly with Combsution as well and Photoshop and Illustrator. What you’s think?

In the Apple Store they say that the new chip is a 50% faster that the older. I would take the second option and pay some extra money for a better video-card. There are more and more video software relaying in the card.

I agree with Rafael. Get the Core 2 Duo and upgrade the video card.

Cool, thanks. I’d feel a lot better buying a brand new one, tho i’d imagine the refurbished would be fine. Just wondering what difference would the 256mb card have over the 128mb one? Say in FCP or Combustion? Not doing any fancy 3d work, mostly just editing and some motion graphics. Don’t use an external monitor with my personal, well not at the moment but I don’t need to budget for the possibility.

Since FCP is getting more and more reliant on a fast graphics card for some plugins (3rd party and native) it’s better to get a faster video card for faster preview and render times.

And if you ever intend to use Motion, you better get a good graphic-card.
BTW in the Core2 Duo you can install 4 GB RAM.

Turns out the refurbished machine was a core 2 duo afterall, apparently the sales rep couldn’t read properly… thanks guys

(looking forward to pushing combustion now with my fancy graphics card…!)
