  • Both FCP5.1.4 and FCP6 on same computer

Posted by Daryl K davis on August 3, 2007 at 7:19 pm

I am in the awaiting picture lock approvals for finishing off a movie that I have been working on with FCP 5.1.4 – should be in 2 to 3 weeks.

In the meantime I picked up some some work editing 2 episodes of a TV series that is currently working with FCP 6 – the project already logged and captured by an assistant – and they are to ship some drives over.

I myself have already purchased FCP 6 and the box has been sitting on a shelf for the past 2 months.

Just wondering how I can keep both versions of FCP on one computer. Should I install a second drive with it’s own operating system and reboot to that drive.

[Daryl K Davis] “Should I install a second drive with it’s own operating system and reboot to that drive.”

Yes…because all the components are updated as well, and some people report issues with previous versions working.

This is what I have done…installed an OS and FCP 6 on my secondary internal drive on my G5.

You could duplicate the original FCP application in the finder, rename it FCP 5.1.4, and then install the new version. It should keep everything separate. You could dual boot, but that seems extreme to me. I’ve done this with 5.0.4 and 5.1.4, but not 6. I’m not positive it’s the best way, but it’s the first way that came to mind.

I’ve done just that with 5.0.4, 5.1.1, and 5.1.4…but they are all FCP 5. Going to FCP 6 is another matter…thus why I recommend a separate drive.

I recall reading an Apple Doc mentioning that you shouldn’t have multiple versions when installing FCP 6…

I don’t have experience with any 6. It was just the gut reaction. Is there another way to do it without having to have reboot the computer?

Why? Does the 20 seconds or less it takes really take that much time out of your day?

Not trying to sound snippy…just curious as to why.

    I have three G5 dual 2.7s and the ALL have FCP 4.5, 5.0.4, 5.1.4 and 6.0.

    Motion 2 and 3.

    Compressor 2 and 3.

    SountrackPro 1 and 2.

    No problems to report.

One is a Kona LH, and two are Aurora Pipe systems.

I have both FCP 5.1.4 and 6.01 on my Mac Pro. Both work no problem. All I did was rename FCP to FCP5.1.4 before I installed version 6. Did the same with Motion, STP, and Compressor.
