burning timecode
Posted by Cheryl Cambras on August 1, 2007 at 9:31 pmHi there,
What’s the simplest/fastest way to burn timecode over an edited sequence in FCP? I need to pass it on to a sound designer. Is it possible to lay timecode without rendering?
Thanks,

August 1, 2007 at 9:43 pmWith Compressor 3 in FCS2 you can select to add a timecode window.
In FCP5, I apply a title over the entire show (delete the text of the title) and then apply a time code filter to the title. You’ll need to manually change the duration of the title in the viewer window to make it long enough.
From my experience, this takes less time to render than if you nest the sequence and apply the filter to it.
Or you can make a master tape and then digitize it back in from the deck with the timecode burned in. (or just give the tape to the sound guy if he’ll accept it.)

August 1, 2007 at 9:45 pmWhat version of FCP do you have?
If you have FCS2, you can put a window burn on a qt movie when you compress it.
If you have a Kona card, you can export the movie, play it through Kona TV and turn on the tc option in the control panel out to a deck/DVD recorder.
Otherwise, use the tc generator filter and render.

2) Export a self contained QT movie (or ref movie…faster) using the sequence settings, reimport that and drop it into a sequence, then add the filter. NO rendering.

No.
Use the timecode generator filter. If you export the timeline as a clip, reimport and lay this clip into a new timeline, and apply just this single filter, it will speed things up a lot. You could even export the timeline in DV format (depending on what it is already) although the quicker TC render will be offset by an export time.

In the time it took me to write that, you got about 4 answers. This forum is competitive.

August 1, 2007 at 9:49 pmThere’s a timecode reader in Effects>Video Filters>Video. If you place it on a clip you’ll get the clip’s source timecode (probably not what you want). If you nest your sequence and put the reader on your nest, you’ll get the timeline’s code. No rendering is necessary, although, when you export the QT you might have rendering due to other effects, etc. If this is going to Pro Tools you need to send a DV QT.
However, for the purpose of sound design, in addition to the video, you might also want to separately export your audio tracks as either an omf or aiff (with a 2-pop or other way of syncing the audio to the video). Ask you sound designer about that.

August 1, 2007 at 9:56 pmIt’s kind of like a radio show, “And the seventh person to submit a post on this thread will be the lucky winner of a free year subscription to the amazing Creative Cow Magazine!”
My excuse is that I’m exporting a movie from FCP right now:) It got to about 85% and then FCP quit, so I had to start over. The cow is a nice way to pass those hours of waiting.
What’s everyone else’s excuse for spending some much time on the cow?

Listening to music to figure out what I want to cut into this sequence.

August 1, 2007 at 10:06 pmWaiting for the 3D guy to get me a goshD render so I can put it in the timeline and post for a client.
Why can’t 3D be fast?
Porche’s are fast and they are 3D. 😀

August 1, 2007 at 10:12 pmSo we’re all just a bunch of bored editors:)
My export is back up to 78%. We’ll see if FCP kicks the bucket again. Ohhhh…. The excitement.
