  Online vd. Offline frame offset in FCPS2

  I get a weird problem, we edited a feature on FCP 5.1.4, shot on Varicam 720/25p captured to DV-Pal for offline editing, now upgraded to FCPS2 and onlined the feature using the Media Manager and Batch Capture in 10 bit 4:2:2 uncompressed. Now all clips are offset by two frames in every clip, cut points in the timeline itself are fine.

  Any Idea whats going wrong here ??

  FCP has a deck “offset” setting. Try that.

  You did a test to confirm that your deck and FCP were accurate before you on-lined the entire sequence, right? I thought so.

  Did you capture from the DVCPro deck and convert to DV for the offline or did you dub to DV tape and edit? Did you use the deck to downconvert to SD or a card like Kona or Decklink? Did you capture via firewire or SDI?

  I have been told that the Panasonic decks in PAL are buggy and particularly using firewire. I have only ever captured from them once and via SDI. The audio was 2 frames out of sync but picture code was correct. Never found out why, just told that PAL is poorly implemented in Panasonic decks.

  As mentioned did you check the deck offset value in 5.1.4 and is it the same in 6?

  I captured the offline material from the SD SDI output of the deck (AH-HD1200), into a Kona LH card as DV-PAL material. The Online Material is captured via HD SDI out of the Deck, i used firewire just for the slomos to use the built in FRC.

  Yes, i checked the capture offset in the device control panel, and thats the funny thing, i get the same result if i put the offset on -2, 0 or +2. I use the Panasonic setting VITC+LTC, RS-422, using decl search mechanism. I renamed the setting so that i made sure it was selected for batch capturing, but it didn

  try setting it to LTC only. I’ve seen this combo cause problems.

  Thanks for all your help,

  We unfortunately found out that the offset is not constant, depending on which reel the material is coming from, 80% is offset +2frames, the rest +1frame as well as -1 frame, and about 5% is in sync.

  The online material was captured with handles so we decided to correct the offset manualy.
  which took us about 6hrs. About the time a recapture would have taken and still with the open question if everything is in sync then.
