  • Exporting Quicktime File in FCP to Burn On DVD

Posted by John Fowler on July 20, 2007 at 1:47 pm

Hi again, I have another question while I’m trying to figure out my exporting-to-my-camera problem, anyways, for the time being I’ve decided to put my project on a DVD for the time being. However, after doing EXPORT to Quicktime Movie (Current Settings [1280*720p 24] for everything) and then burning it via iDVD 6 (I don’t have DVD Studio Pro yet) it looks rather pixelated on my TVs. I re-examined the original exported FCP Quicktime movie and it looks fine when expanded to fit my monitor, I even re-did it to make sure. I also tried burning a couple of older projects onto DVD and they look pixelated as well, one of which was originally shot on 16mm. I’m using the current settings when exporting the movie so I’m baffled as to why it looks overly pixelated when the DVD is finished burning. Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,
    John

    John,

iDVD is a very basic, very mediocre DVD encoding and burning program. To do a decent job you will need to learn to use Compressor and DVDSP. The basics are not difficult. Just use one of the DVD presets in Compressor and then use the very basic funtionality of DVDSP. Once you know how to use them properly you’ll be very glad you did.

Try on your own first, then come on back for all the help you need…

Hi David, thanks a bunch for your help. I’ll do that and finally get off my bum and buy DVDSP.

I thought you most likely had Final Cut Studio. Its definitely worth the price of admission…

No I have the student FCP but I’m just going to buy FCP Studio since it comes with DVDSP and a lot of other goodies that I want.

The student FCP didn’t have the proper codec to capture 720p24 footage so I had to borrow the school’s updated version until I was willing to drop 1200 bucks for FCP Studio. So expensive for a poor student but, oh well. 😉
