Anyone using these drives for video in a Mac? Are there any hands on reports posted somewhere for video work. I am thinking of possibly making a new system with a Mac octo an adding 3 or 4 of these to do HDV/Prores work internally. Maybe setting up a RAID.

I’m testing my second SATA array full of these drives. The first one was a MaxxDigital 8TB 8 Bay array with close to 500MB/s read/write in RAID 5. Now I’m testing a Dulce 8TB 8Bay array and while the read/write is slower in RAID 5, there are other features of it that are excellent so it’s kind of a toss up for the moment.

The MaxxDigital ran for three weeks with no issues here. It was insanely quiet too for that many drives running.

The Hitachi 1Tb drives are outstanding, but you do pay a hefty premium for them, at $399, when you consider the 500Gb drives can be had for just $130.

Very true… But in Walter’s case, he’d have to have 16 of them to make up 8 TB. For the $399 price tag, you have less drives, less heat, less power comsumption in a RAID tower.

Now, if I could just put those into my TerraBlock, I’d be a happy camper. I know I could but NOT for $399 per drive.

I have to say that I am droolling over these drives.

I love the 8 drive 8TB setup. Very small with a LOT of storage room. The Dulce unit is even smaller than the MaxxDigital and Sonnet setup which is also nice. I noticed that all of the units are rather quiet which is nice.

The Sonnet was sitting in on of our edit suites for three weeks and my editor never mentioned anything about being annoyed with the fans. The MaxxDigital was sitting out near the rack, but it was not noticeable anytime you went near it.

It’s not the fans that are the loud bit theses days…it’s the drives.. 8 segates chuntering away seeking 6 streams of SD sounds impressive, clients seem to like it also.. lol.. but can get a bit much.

Are the Hitachi 1TB drives enterprise class? good fo raid etc.. ?

two 500gb are $260 and take up more space and ports. So for $30 or 40 more dollars you save space and ports. Are these drives running hotter temps?

I just stuck my hand behind the 8bay 8TB Dulce unit I’m testing and there’s cool air coming out the back. It’s been running for about 13 hours today and there’s cool air coming out. That’s nice to see. I’m pretty sure both the Sonnet and MaxxDigital had slightly warm air, but nothing close to hot.

    Gary,

I’ve only seen them selling for $399.00, at #00 each that is certainly worthwhile.
