    Hey guys,

I shoot alot so in turn I have alot of material digitized. I currently have 15 g-drive external hard drives daisy chained to my mac. I am looking for a better way to store my digitized material, my work flow now leaves me with to many wires, and not enough plugs to plug all these drives and is just not convenient. I found this company. ttp://www.micronet.com/General/prodList.asp?CatID=114&Cat=Product
Does this seem like a good product to buy for editing video? I currently shoot with a Panasonic Dv100B and a cannon XhA1-HDV camera. I dont deal in the uncompressed HD workflow, but one day when they are readily available I would like to buy a redcam. Will this product work with a redcam? If not, what does? Should I just buy a couple terabyte g-raids??? I would like some help. Thank you.-Charles

No…not a good solution. The interface is Gigabit Ethernet only. You want a good eSATA drive for this. Caldigit S2VR duo, or S2VR HD, Sonnet 500P, MacGurus Burley Box, Weibetech SilverSata…good reputable company with proven records in making drives that work wiht video.

I may have missed it on that link, but what is the sustained throughput on those drives? Personally I wouldn’t want to rely on gigabit for an interface either, not sure how stable that is going to be if you need this everyday. Take a look at CalDigit, https://www.caldigit.com I think that’s what I will be going with once my SCSI array finally bites the dust.

Ok, I’m not saying this MicroNet thing looks good (it really doesn’t look like it’s made with video in mind) but I just wanted to point out that I use an Avid Unity at work every day that runs over gigabit. We have 5 stations hooked up to it and edit DV and DVCPRO HD over the network with no problem.

So I wouldn’t shy away from a gigabit solution but yes, it would be best to get something that was designed specifically for video use which this doesn’t seem to be.

Jeff…the Unity doesn’t only run on Gigabit. There are controller cards involved that make it work better. Just like XSAN…which is also GigE. Gigabit alone will maybe work with DV, but anything more and you need SAN controllers.

[Shane Ross] “You want a good eSATA drive for this.”

    Shane,

I love my eSATA boxes for their speed, but frankly, I hate the connectors and the cables, which are so stiff. When I use my two bay Firmtek box with my Powerbook, I’m always afraid the stiff cables will pull out if the laptop gets moved a bit. Have you found any eSATA cables that are more flexible?

    Thanks,
    David

We’ve tested the Sonnet D800 Fusion box (8bay SATA array), a Maxx Digital 8bay ProAVIO SATA unit and are testing a Dulce 8bay SATA unit as well. Maxx and Sonnett are both outstanding, the Maxx was about 100MB/s faster. Dulce was started by some of the engineers from Med

    ATTO R380. Outstanding, no issues.

    Dulce has their own.

Atto is usually the most expensive option, but in this case, the product is very solid and that’s always worth whatever you pay.
