Which settings do I use to capture 1080p 59.94 4:4:4 in FCP?
Hi, I’m having a problem capturing some HD footage on to my FCP – can anyone help?
We need to capture 1080p 59.94 footage at 4:4:4. Up-until now we’ve been caputring 1080p 59.94 at 8 bit Uncompressed 4:2:2 and that’s been fine. We’re using the latest Mac Pro and we have FCP version 5.1.4 but I’m about to upgrade it to Studio 2. We’re capturing through the Kona 3 card and all the software is up to date.
The settings I was advised to use in the capture preset window was ‘AJA Kona3: 1080p 59.94 10 Bit’ and then to alter the compressor to ‘None’. However this dropped frames when I started to capture the footage.
Does anyone know the settings I should use in order to stop getting the ‘dropped frame’ error message when I try and capture?

this does not “really” exist as a format outside of a couple of Science projects and it if it did you would need storage that could sustain over 700 MBps
FCP currently supports 1080 60p @ 4:2:2 and requires a Dual Link connection from specific HDcam SRW-1 decks and an array that can support a sustained data rate over 350 MBps. < that is megabytes per second -NOT megabits>

I do not know you told you to do that but they are grossly in error.

We’re actually well aware of FCP’s capabilities with 1080p 4:2:2 as we already capture and edit with this footage. As for the deck – this isn’t an issue as we work in the gameing industry and capture straight out of the console which plays footage 1080p 59.94. Likewise we are required to create edits with as little compressions as possible for these games. Therefore we are now trying to get to the stage where we can capture 1080p 4:4:4.
If anyone knows if this is possible now or if there are some updates coming up in the near future that will allow us to do this on FCP could you let us know please. Hardware regardless, will FCP do this with and AJA Kona 3 card?

no gaming console sends out 1080 60p as recorded in this world – NO gaming console I have ever herad about has a dual link signal out.
Every gaming console I have ever worked with ( I tested Blu-Ray for Sony /PS3 and spoke on HD at the Madrid launch of the PS3 console)
The units I had all spit out 1080 60i not p (and it would be PsF anyway)
I was showing 1080 60p 4:2:2 at NAB and it required finding very specific monitors since there are only 6 or so that can truly support that frame rate.
HDMI outputs line double 1080 60i making what is erroneously called 60p to make it look better on Plasma screens but it is not 60p as specified by SMPTE

if it existed as a usable video format today you could do it with the kona3 card you have.
You could only capture it over dual link HDSDI with infiniband or a bonded 4G fibre connection to some incredibly fast storage.

What drive array are you using? Assuming you’ve run the AJA Kona System Test, what speeds can your array sustain?
