Hi all, I just started working with P2 footage and it is driving me up the wall. I have come up with a workflow that seems like it won’t result in any major disastors but I’d like to run it past the experts… I import the P2 files into FCP, and put them into a bin named whatever I called the P2 “reel” or capture scratch folder. I then put them in chronological order and start watching them, taking log notes and adding a number (501, 502) to its random panasonic name, (leaving me with names like 501 000BDT). I do not rename the original clips.

Will this work? Is there a better way? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rebecca

BTW I’ve been importing quicktime files.

When we shoot we slate each take making sure the slate is the first frame of the clip. That way when you look at the footage with FCP P2 import, when you click on the clip you see the slate and know what you’re looking at. The other thing is to sort the P2 import bin by media start. That way your clips are in timecode order. That also makes it easier to know what you’re looking at. It’d be great if Panasonic (or a third party) would come up with a way to easily name clips as they were shot.

Raylight for Mac can do it (automatically name clips) if you have release 1.05 or later. If you have an older version update it at https://dvfilm.com/update

Thanks for that info, Marcus. Raylight has been great! It’s saved me a lot of time not having to import all my media. Making timecode dubs is a breeze. I didn’t know about the renaming capability. I’ll check that out.
