    So I think I may have confused myself with this question but appreciate any help.

    Our project was shot in HD CAM – So 1440 x 1080 thats uncompressed to 1920 x 1080 once digitised.

    In FCP 6 there isnt an option for 1440 x 1080 in the sequence or capture preset. SO its all about selecting a 1920 x 1080 option- BUT WHICH ONE??!! There’s HDTV – or 1080i (we are shooting P frame though) or any other ideas??

    Codec- Prores 422
    Output back to HD CAM 25P master

    Forget about the 1440 thing. It’s purely academic unless you have a Sony xpri editing system. HDcam is always 1920×1080 once the signal leaves the deck.

    Don’t fool around with settings. Trust the Easy Setups. Use a ProRes 1080 setup. All ProRes 1080 setups are 1920×1080.

    As for the framerate and scan type, you’ll have to ask the cameraman what format it was shot on. 99% of the time it will either be 59.94i or 23.98p.

    Final Cut is the least of your worries if you aren’t familiar with these terms. The HDCam deck will be much more difficult to configure. Make sure you aren’t converting anything with the deck. Have it playback whatever format it was shot on.

    ProRes422 or Uncompressed HD. As stated, the SDI output sorts the pixel aspect.

    HDCams have a scheme called progressive segmented frames (psf). It is possible that your tape is shot with this setting. Check for psf displayed on the HDCam deck during playback. This signal can be captured by a 1080i setting in FCP.

    If you are delivering to a broadcaster, then use the 1080i setting. As always, check what format the broadcaster will accept.

    That’s actually a mistake. If the footage is 23.98psf, you absolutely want to capture and edit in 23.98, regardless of what the delivery format is.

    Capturing and editing in 1080i60 will destroy the 3:2 pulldown cadence.

    If the delivery needs to be 1080i60, then you just output that from your 23.98 sequence. Its very easy to do this with a Kona or Decklink without any additional rendering. That way the 3:2 cadence will be consistent throughout the piece.

    Not where I come from sunshine. A 25psf tapes get captured as 1080 50i.

    You poor buggers in NTSC land have cadence catastophe that we just chuckle about.

    HDCAM should always be treated at 1920×1080 for uncompressed capture. There is no native HDCAM codec in any system except Sony Xpri. However, if you are dealing with NATIVE XDCAM-HD, that IS 1440×1080 and there is a corresponding ProRes 1440 settings for that case only.

    the original Poster was talking about 25P

    so do not confuse the matter, Sean was correct about not worrying about the 1440 setting
    that is for HDV / XDcam not HDcam.

    only Sony Xpri and Quantel can see the native 1440 on Sony tape via SDTI

    Huh? I work with the Sony JH3 decks all the time and they do 3-2 on output using the 23.98PD setting, not 2224.

    Or do you mean in PAL? In which case, wouldn’t the PAL cadence be 24+1?

    I did not think the J series decks could do a 1080 23.98 > 1080 60i conversion,

    The SR decks I have been working with all default to 2:2:2:4 but can be set to 3:2 if you can find the menu option.
