Working on a large project with 4 Asst. Editors. We all have the same media on 5 different drives so we can send project files back & forth to each other.

When an editor sends me his project file, the clips in the bins are connected, but none of the timelines have connected media.

When I try to reconnect the timeline media, it will only reconnect one file at a time. We have over 600 clips on this project and I do not have the time to reconnect each clip individually. Plus each time an editor sends me a new timeline, I have to start the reconnecting all over again.

We are all running on FCP 5. I installed FCP 6 today to see if it could help, with no success.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

When I’ve worked in this situation before we have cloned each media drive. When I say cloned, I mean that each media drive had exactly the same name and file hierarchy as the original drive. This makes FCP’s reconnect think that nothing has changed and no reconnect is required.

When you say that all of your media is copied on all the drives, do you know if its the same folder structure? I think FCP gets all confused if the folder structure isn’t the same on every drive and you get into that problem where you have to reconnect every clip.

    hope this helps,
    yo

Do you have “Reconnect all files in relative path” selected when you start reconnecting?

I like to add a search location to the folder where the media is. It makes it easy to just hit “search” and let FCP do it’s thing.

Thanks for the quick responce. Yes, all the drives are clones. However the Master has changed slightly. I will try having the guys bring in their drive to help it match up.

It gets even weirder. My clips have names like: 01/E/03. But when it opens in Reconnect Manager, it wants to look for a clip named: 01E03. It is dropping the forward slashes! It has not done this before.

It sometimes has the correct name, but still has to be lead by the hand to find the original clip. I do have Relative Paths selected. I have to deselect matched names cause it’s changed the name.

    Thanks guys!

I don’t think you should use “/” and “\” in your file names. I might need backup from the gurus here, but that would probably screw up most file management. Hate it say it, but you should probably swap those characters for underscores or something similar. Or you could limp along with your present situation and reconnect every file every time you share you timeline.

    sorry

Been using forward slashes for years without a problem. I thought / & \ were only problematic with Windooze.

    Jeff,

We’ve just noticed this “reconnect one at a time” issue just recently as we’ve upgraded to FCP 6. Under certain circumstances, even though we have “reconnect all files in similar path” checked, it just doesn’t work. We’ve found that this is somehow project related. Meaning, if you create a new project with that media it seems to work OK. Very strange.

    Thanks Mark!

It is happening to us in both FCP 5 & 6. I will try the new project trick in the AM.

    Mark,

That is precisely what I found and precisely what I reported to Apple. Don’t think they’ve been able to reproduce it. Can you please report it to them too???

Our friends in Cupertino do read these and other internet forums . Where do you think the ideas for all those new features come from? 🙂

    Mark –

“Our friends in Cupertino do read these and other internet forums . Where do you think the ideas for all those new features come from? :)”

I figure they come from the marketing department. FCP upgrades tend to match or better what rival (think Avid and Adobe) NLE maker’s are doing – rarely do I see an effort to fix any of the internal problems and inconsistencies that are documented daily on these forums.
