We’re shooting in HDV and we have an M10U deck for capturing. Since HDV is impossible to edit, we’re thinking about getting an AJA io HD transcoder, updating our G5 to a dual core Mac, and feeding the signal from the M10U to the AJA io HD & firewire out to FCP. I understand that FCP can transcode the HD signal to ProRez.

Does anyone have any experience with dealing with HDV, or the AJA etc. and is this a good way to go. When talking with the AJA folks, they tell me that we will have to go out of the M10U component, (the M10U transcodes this into some mysterious HD signal) then into the AJA, and the AJA goes out by firewire to FCP.

[Michael] “Since HDV is impossible to edit,”

If you do a Cow search for HDV over the last couple of months you’ll find plenty of disagreement with that statement. Some agreement too.

I don’t know what your timeline is for this project, but the io-HD hasn’t been released yet. You could use another HD analog capture device for now, like AJA’s LH or LHe.

I’d suggest reading Tim Wilson’s just posted article about PreRes 422 and HDV:

    Dear David,
Thank you for Tim Wilson’s article. It is exactly what folks need who are wandering into the dimly lit wilderness of HD,HDV and ProRes.

We have a dual G5 and the AJA LH because for some jobs we had used lots of Beta SP archival stuff At present, we tried shooting a short form job in HDV, downconverted it with our M10U deck, edited it, and then tried to recapture in HDV. To remain Kosher, we had a good tech person with us. However, the deck seemed to suffer a psychotic breakdown and went all over the place. Some timecodes were the same, most others were pure fantasy. It became clear why everyone wants to get out of HDV as soon as possible and into an editable HD format.

We do long form documentarys and we were thinking of getting the AJA io HD when it comes out, but It seems to me that the present state of affairs is that this stuff will cost a lot of money with no guarantees. Fortunately, we can still shoot and downconvert.
    Thanks again
