I have just gotten all my video on my external HD. Is there a way to edit an offline clip without taking my External HD with me everywhere? Can’t seem to make it work, please help! This is on my Macbook Pro which FYI only has 20gigs available on the internal HD

the only way to edit media is to have the media. No media, no edit. So, keep the HD handy. If the clips are small put them on a smaller F/W drive. they make really small 80 gig drives.(4inches by six inches)

you can edit on the timeline without having the media present on the work drive yes, but without it being present, you will get the RED missing media screen, and not be able to see what you are editing…. so Yes you could do what your asking, but it wouldn’t serve much purpose unless you know what each frame of your clips look like by memory.

Read the sections on Media Manager and transcoding to Offline RT in the manual.

Basically, you transcode your footage to a much smaller codec (PhotoJPEG) and edit. Then when you are done with your offline, you reconnect to the full res medial.
