Graphics tablet use in FCP
Posted by Rj Thomas on June 13, 2007 at 4:20 pmI’m wondering if anyone has had any experience using a graphics tablet in FCP. I know they’re used a lot by people editing photos. I’m just wondering if it might be a little bit better ergonomically.

June 13, 2007 at 5:37 pmI love mine and use it quite a bit.
I find it helps take the stress off my forearms and wrists.
I can trade up between keyboard, mouse, and tablet easily if one or another starts to fatigue my wrists.
However, I’m a somewhat ambidextrous lefty that learned to mouse back in the days when the mouse was not relocatable…so I use the mouse with my right hand and use the stylus with my left.
It’s very helpful to be able to use both hands.

June 13, 2007 at 9:39 pmI have been using Wacom 4″ x 5″ since my first AVID in 1992. I never mouse anymore. I can go all day on a tablet on all my apps – and it’s faster than a mouse or trackball. With the two screen AVID in ’92, mousing across all that real estate took its toll. I was getting RSI syptoms. Switched to a tablet and never looked back. Highly recommended.

June 14, 2007 at 7:43 amI’ve been using Wacom graphics tablets since 1997.
Right now I have an Intuos 2 on my G5. A Kensington Orbit track ball is used for those times when more precise movements are needed. As for the mouse, it’s sitting behind the monitor. I don’t think I’ve touched it since I bought the computer.

June 14, 2007 at 11:20 amI’m using a Wacom A6 Wide, and as a compromise between portability and usability I find it just about perfect. Easily luggable and wide enough for accurate placement of the cursor – that’s on a variety of systems, mac and PC – for FCP its great on a 2×23″ cinema display desktop. Ergonomically I wouldn’t be without it now – I’ve suffered from elbow strain and using the mouse was making it much worse – at one stage I was worried I’d have to take time off, as that seemed to be the only thing that made it better – but after 3 months with the Wacom all’s well. Do it, wou won’t regret it!

“I’ve been editing with a tablet since 1998 and can’t edit with anything else. Especially with two screens it’s very easy to navigate both. Takes about 2 hours to get used to how a tablet works vs. a mouse, but once you switch, you’ll never want to touch a mouse again.
