  Anamorphic render settings for DVD Studio Pro

  I wanted to make sure this methodology is correct. 3 questions:

  For a 16×9, SD movie, to be played widescreen on DVD, (with maximum quality) the movie has to be rendered anamorphically then stretched back out with the DVDSP?

  I found when using compressor to convert the 960×540 movie into a 16×9 mpeg 2, that it makes a 700 x 404 mp2. Seems like i’m loosing 46 pixels of resolution?

  So if I take the final 960×540 square pixel movie, put it in a 720×480 comp, render it out, and set it up in DVDSP correctly. This will give me the highest resolution possible for a SD DVD?

  I think i’ve got it but want a second opinion.

  I don’t know why you’re trying to reinvent the wheel, Dustin.

  Just create your AE project using the NTSC DV widescreen preset. This will create a 720×480 Comp, with a Pixel Aspect ratio of 1.2. This is visually equivalent, in terms of aspect, to a 864×480 file with square pixels. That’s all there is to it.

  That would be “wrong”, if that matters (though the aspect relationship is quite similar). The usually preferred square pixels equivalent for NTSC DV widescreen would be, again, 864×480. In any case, the result will have the same quality as a 720×480 comp with 1.2 PAR , which is native frame size/PAR relationship.

  Thanks, for the replies. For final output I rendered the 960×540 movie from a DV 720×480 widescreen comp. Took it into DVDSP and built the 16×9 dvd from that. All and all, throughout the day I built the DVD 4 different ways and got the same, 16×9 results concluding and reassuring that there is more than one way to skin a cat.

  Dave: I’m trying to figure out what exactly is it that you wanted to state. I mean, I said the right size is 720×480 with 1.2 PAR and you say, sorry the right size is 720×480?
