Hello! I have a FCP 5 system and I am placing a bid on editing a talk show so I need a lot of storage. I am a bit new to FCP so is there a “standard” external raid array that will work with FCP and has at least a terra bite of storage? I would also like to “hot swap” out a drive and put a new one in if a drive craps out on me. Is fiber channel really worth it or will fire wire 800 do? How about SATA? I am willing to pay a little more for speed and reliability, and I am just wondering what everyone out there uses. Thanks for you input

The sky is the limit here… New technologies are allowing some awesome drive configurations.

There are lots out there. Personally, I would look into CalDigit for a local firewire or SATA solution.

If fibre channel is your thing and you can afford it, then you should really look at Facilis TerraBlock. It has the most bang for the buck. Its very easy to use and doesn’t require a dedicated server to run.

We’ve been using the TerraBlock system for a little more than a year now with absolutely no problems. I feel some much better having the protection that it affords and besides, the ability to share projects with other systems has really increased our workflow.

Hey, I just got a lightning quick esata setup from Macgurus.com $2000 for a five bay 3.7tb tower. I dont think you can beat that anywhere. Unless you build your own. This thing is freaking fast in raid 0.

What format is the show and what format will you Post in?

There are several SATA arrays out there right now that offer very high speeds and reasonable prices along with the security of RAID 5 and higher. If you’re cutting a broadcast show you need the security of RAID protection or at least a backup device, like we run here.

What will do for you depends on what format(s) you’ll be working / delivering in. As Wayne said, the sky is the limit. Some good brands to look at are Ciprico, Sonnet, LaCie and Facilis.

I have been working on a couple of systems setup with the Sonnet eSATA bays & PCI x/e cards. They are on a spankin’ new 8-core as well as a couple of G5 2.0/DP dinos. 🙂

    Very easy to set up.

I have a Sonnet Fusion 500 at my home studio, so I can do homework very easily.

The only down side to the Sonnet is it’s limited RAID format support, but I maintain a working back-up drive as I work thru projects.

One of my clients needs to add some additional ultra-scsi drives to his AVID Adrenaline. Ouch!
