My external firewire deck is no longer recognised by my G5. It started suddenly, not after any updates.

Whenever I start up FCP I get the message: Unable to locate the following external devices: Apple Firewire PAL etc… I tried quitting, trashing preferences, trashing QT receipts and reinstalling QT, all with no effect.

None of my FCP settings have changed and trying different firewire cables hasn’t helped either.

Is there some other reason for this? I’m getting pretty desperate now. Thanks.

    Maria luisa,
if you got IMovie you can check quickly if is a problem of the desk or the Firewire cable,
If you get your picture in IMovie then is a FC problem.
    Cheers,

Does the firewire port work at all? Try it with a FW hard drive if you have one.

Also, plug in the deck, turn it on, open FCP with log and capture. Now go to the utilities folder and open up the System Profiler. Select Firewire. Does it list anything?

It might be time for you to call Apple or take your computer into an Apple Store if you can’t get the port to recognize anything.

    Hi
Thanks for the reply, and no the FW port wasn’t working with anything. Problem solved though: I repaired permissions and that seems to have done the trick. Cheers.

Please help, I’m new to this forum.
I’m having exactly the same problem as described above ( FCP can’t locate FW ). I’ve tried trashing old QT preferences and reinstall Qt 731 a few times and did permissions repair but to no avail, FCP still can not locate FW connection. Firewire ports are working OK.
Any advices will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi

Sounds like you’ve tried everything. The only other things I would suggest is:

Turn external device, launch FCP in different order.
    Turn your external device off/on.
    Quit FCP.
    Restart your machine.

    Good luck!

I’d also tried turning on and off the external device in different sequence, but o no avail. I did try everything indeed short of reformatting the whole drive and reinstall everything from scratch. Thanks for the reply.
