  • color desaturated from photoshop with FCP 6 and Motion 3

I recently upgraded to FCP 6 and Motion 3. Now when I import layered photoshop documents into either one of them, they have only about half the saturation of the original. What’s going on? This didn’t happen in FCP 5 and Motion 2. It even happens when I convert my old FCP and Motion files over to the new version. All my work is done with still images from photoshop so this is kind of big deal to me. Don’t know if this matters, but I’m editing in 1080i60 at 24 fps working on a MacBook Pro. Anyway, I sure would like to import my images with the colors that I see in photoshop! Hope someone can help. Thanks. Ellen

There are new gamma settings for imported footage in FCP 6. Just play with those until you get it right.

To find the Gamma Levels control, either:

    – Right click and select Item Settings. Then under Gamma Levels right click again to change the settings.

    or

    – In the browser right click on the top of the columns and select “Show Gamma Levels.” Then open the clip up in the viewer and right click on the Gamma Levels field for the clip in the browser and select an option. Once you know what setting to use (probably 2.2) then you can select all of the clips in the browser and change the number in the Gamma Levels field.

You can also change your preferences to always interpret stills a certain way in the editing tab of system preferences.

Hmmm. When I look at the item properties, the area next to Gamma is blank. Control clicking doesn’t do anything. However, in Motion 3 (where I was having the same problem) I’m able to change the Gamma there from 1.8 to 2.2. I’m wondering why I can’t do this in FCP.

Never mind. Since it was a layered PSD I had to open it in its own sequence. Then I was able to change its gamma.
