Flip4Mac and Gamma
Posted by Rafael Amador on June 4, 2007 at 12:26 pmI will need to purchase Flip4mac to make .wmv to be watched in some of my clients PCs. My question is, Do F4M compensate for the different gamma Mac/PC so the clips won’t look to dark? It gots any filter or will be necesary a QT movie with the gamma already chaged?
Thanks in advance.

June 4, 2007 at 1:37 pmWMF’s won’t automatically change the gamma levels for PC playback don’t think, so you’d need to do that manually with FCP or I think there may be a way to do it with flip4mac… not sure… I am sure though that Episode Pro has filters for the job.

June 4, 2007 at 2:39 pmDo you need to boost or reduce gamma when exporting for a PC in WMV (through episode)?

June 4, 2007 at 2:40 pmThe gamma is there but it’s not a universal setting. You can get a good target but most monitors, especially projectors and laptops, are all different. We add a bit of brightness, too.
We created a 1 minute clip that had a wide range of chroma and scene values. We then ran it trough Flip using different settings. This is important: You’ve got to figure out a way to tell the files apart!
Use a file name or do what we did: super the brightness/gamma settings over the clip.bogiesan
This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

June 4, 2007 at 3:05 pmCompressor has the controls you’ll need for gamma, brightness and contrast. The Flip4Mac encoder works within Compressor. We turn gamma down and contrast up.

June 4, 2007 at 3:43 pmThanks everybody. The solution that Tom points, through Compressor can be the way. Although I’ll have a “google’ to Episode.
Cheers,
