Recently, I have found that when I import then playback an avi in After Effects the image will alternate between color and black and white.

If I import something with an alpha channel, the image, when played back, will alternate between a black and white background and a bright yellow background.

When I have two or more layers on top of each other, I can see all the layers as though each layer’s opacity was set at much less than 100%

    What am I doing wrong?

If this is something that has just happened recently, then has something changed in your system?

My first guess without other information would be to update/downgrade you graphics card driver. Depending on your card manufacturer, they may have a recommended driver for After Effects – and it’s often not the latest one they’ve qualified.

There surely has something changed on your system. Either it’s a graphics card related problem as Ben suggested or you updated a CoDec or Mediaplayer.
