Ok with all the problems folks are reporting with bugs and issues in FCP 6, I’m happy to report an issue that popped up with FCP 4.5 (or maybe earlier) was finally addressed.

When using multiple photoshop layers in an FCP Sequence and nesting those layers, the nest would not take the name correctly in the browser. For example, in my timeline I create a nest of three photoshop layers and call it “Nest 1.” In the timeline I see Nest 1 as I named it. In the Browser I would see a new nest with the name of the Sequence, NOT what I named it.

Now in my first test on FCP 6 using my MacBook Pro, the nest in the Browser matched what I named it in the Sequence. Finally! Only took two years or so (since FCP 3) to get that feature working again, but I’m really glad to see it! Nesting is a HUGE part of my workflow for most of the shows I cut and this bugaboo has been driving me nuts.

So something positive to report, at least for me!

Where??? Have I missed something? I thought all seemed pretty tranquil.

Indeed, things seem pretty smooth (thank goodness)

Great to hear some nesting issues are finally worked out though, I was just having a conversation with a co-worker about that today. (inconsistent nesting issues)

Has anyone observed that if one used PShop layers, they take on the names of the sequence. So if you’ve taken trouble to name your layers in PShop, you lose all names in FCP pre-6.

Has this been fixed too in FCP 6

Um, didn’t you read my post? That’s what has been fixed.

Oh wait, that’s something different. NEVER saw that issue here. If I drop a single photoshop layer into a Sequence and leave it alone (no nesting) the layers retain their names.

I’ve never never seen photoshop layers lose their names unless they were nested.

Just created a PShop file with 4 layers. File size set to PAL 720×576. Called it ‘Named layers.psd’

Named the layers, red, blue, green, yellow.

Imported file into FCP 5.1.4. Now its a seq with the 4 layers names intact.

I create a new seq set to DV-PAL. Call it. ‘layer names’.
I copy and paste the ‘red’ layer from the PShop layers seq into this new seq.

In this seq, I expect to have a clip called ‘red’

Now, not only does this clip get automatically named ‘Named layers.psd’ even the seq name changes from ‘layer names’ to ‘Named layers.psd’

That’s what I’m, talking about. Extremely frustrating if you make a multi-layer comp in PShop and then want to animate layers in FCP. They all get names changed. And you can’t even retain this seq name.

If you’ve never observed this FCP 5.1 or earlier, and I’m seeing it even now (in FCP 5.1.4), and assuming you work in NTSC, then is this a PAL thing?

Have never seen this behavior. I create photoshop files of 30 – 50 layers for Good Eats all the time and when bringing the layers into my sequences, they retain the correct layer name. I’m still running FCP 5.1.4 on my main systems and testing FCP on my laptop.

Doubt this would be a PAL thing as it has nothing to do with NTSC/PAL.

[Neil Sadwelkar] ” copy and paste the ‘red’ layer from the PShop layers seq into this new seq.”

What happens when you drag that layer into the browser, what’s it named then?

And actually why the copy and paste at all? I keep my Photoshop Sequence open at all times, double click the layer I need into the Viewer, then edit that into my main sequence.

No need to copy/paste at all.

The NTSC and PAL behavior is identical in 5.1.4. If you copy and paste the layers into an empty sequence the layer names are retain and the sequence is renamed. It basically now matches the PSD sequence. If you paste into an existing sequence the layer names are changed to the PSD sequence name, and the original layer names are not retained.

If you drag and drop from the PSD sequence to the Browser the layer names are lost and are all given the PSD sequence name. if you paste into the Browser the layer names are retained.

    I can’t speak to FCP6.

    All the best,

    Tom
