Color does NOT support legal Broadcast levels
The default values of the Ceiling IRE and Floor IRE parameters of the Broadcast Safe settings do not limit the video signal as expected. To limit luma at 100 IRE, the Ceiling IRE parameter should be set to 99.3337357. To limit luma at 0 IRE, the Floor IRE parameter should be set to 1.187550.
Ok, the software is looking more lame by the second. With Final Touch HD, at least I knew I could simply set 0 and 99 and be done with it. Now I have to set these Pi squared numbers and hope, really hope that the legalize works. Except……

Not to my knowledge, at least not that network quality control ever noticed for the shows that we are able to grade with Final Touch HD.

After reading Michael Sandness’ excellent post in the Color Forum, broadcast safe might be just an issue when you set your ceiling above 99, say to 100. As a matter of course, we always set our ceiling to 99 when using Final Touch HD anyway so as not to push the level all the way and cover our butts.
So broadcast safe just might be working correctly after all, but I’ll have to wait until we receive the product and run a test through Quality Control at one of the networks.

Walter, thanks for alerting us to Color info in another forum.
At the risk of sounding obsequious, this is a great help to those of us that don’t regularly check some forums. This also helps limit rumors, and helps me greatly with workflow planning for a new project I’m starting.

One interesting piece of spin I’ve heard from the mouths of Apple people (not seen in writing, of course) is that Final Touch HD cost a ‘X’ thousand dollars, alone, and you get it in FCS for several hundred dollars upgrade.
Seems we’ll be getting what we pay for, Walter.
