I’m looking at buying the new MacBookPro 17″, specifically to edit (on location) in 8-bit Uncompressed. Can I do this with a Firewire800 drive, or do I need RAIDED drives for this?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Maybe, you would want something like the CalDigit Firewire VR which has two drives striped together. But you’re also going to need an AJA Io to get your video in and out of the system and the laptop might choke with both Firewire devices going at the same time.

You could do it with a single external SATA drive… or a FW 800 raid.

I’d still go the way of the eSATA… would probably cost about the same and in any event, you’d need an Io to capture with, and a FW express card or eSATA express card…

I use my MBP to edit to tape all the time, capturing and then mastering with the AJA Io. Because the Io uses so much of the FW bandwith I have the Sonnet SATA card and a SATA enclosure. Works great. The Sonnet card has 2 ports that are port multiplers so you can use the P500 enclosure and have 5 drives stripe together (add to enclosures and stripe 10 drives!) The laptop can handle the video no problem it is the drives you need to think through.

    Thanks for the replies.

Msacci, I like your Sonnet express card solution. Do you think I can run a single LaCie d2 SATA II 3Gbits 500gb Hard Drive, or would I need to pair a couple of them in a RAID to obtain the throughput I’d need for 8bit uncompressed?

    Thanks again

You can get a single SATA to work OK, but you’ll get more streams at the same time with a RAID… i.e. more RT effects that involve more than one clip at a time playing back…
