Sony DSR11 Capture problems
Posted by Jacques Bailhe on May 18, 2007 at 12:11 amMy Sony DSR11 used to work fine, but after various security and other upgrade over the last year, it now creates problems. No capture setting will recognize the deck and it wipes out my MOTU 828 firewire audio.
Any suggections much appreciated
FCP 5.1.4. Dual 2ghz. Blackmagic HD Extreme. Motu 828.

What other firewire devices do you have plugged in?
My DSR11 works fine most of the time, but I have also noticed that some of the upgrades over the last year have made it more tempermental as far as conflicts with other firewire devices. There are times now when I need to unplug all firewire devices and reboot my G5 just to get audio working with the DSR11. That never used to be the case.

May 18, 2007 at 2:14 amI have two LaCie big drives piggybacked on the FW800 port. And of course the Motu 828 audio unit. Other than that, none.

May 18, 2007 at 5:56 amHa! Pull that motu, put your FW800 drives on a PCI card and try again.
(and then if it works better attach your motu when you need it, or get yourself a firewire a/b switch for motu/dsr-11 use and keep you fw800 drives on the PCI card)

May 18, 2007 at 11:10 pmThanks for the tip, however, not a satisfying solution. With Atto SCSCI and double space Nvidia 6800, there’s no room for more PCI cards to run the LaCie drives. I used to be able to work with my Motu 828 and DSR11 and want to now -spoiled brat that I am. How is it I can have all those drives and Motu running, plus other FW drives I use to move my work to on-line facility, etc., but I get flummoxed when I plug in the DSR11? Probably a questionw without a good answer.
Clearly something changed in the softwre over the years that now creates an unpleasant conflict.
I do appreciae your thoughtful help.

May 19, 2007 at 12:24 amTry connecting one device at a time and see if you get different results.

May 19, 2007 at 1:02 pmThe reason the DSR-11 bogs down the bus is because it’s essentially a FW100 device. It drags the entire bus down to FW100. You’re FW drives, and probably your MOTU device need at least FW400, if not 800, to operate in the manner to which you’ve become accustomed.
The entire bus is slowed down to the lowest communication rate of the “dumbest” device on the bus. ‘Tis the nature of the beast.
That’s why it’s usually recommended that input/monitoring and storage be split up onto separate busses.
