Hi, this may or may or may not be relevant to some of you…

I posted on here about a week ago asking about optimizing MiniDV footage for HDTV viewing. After trying a few resizing and chroma correcting effecs with little or no noticeable change, I came across something.

I was viewing my video files in m4v format playing off iTunes through an AppleTV system onto my HDTV. To my surprise, they looked a lot better than what I was getting on DVD. So i experemented with getting that picture quality onto a DVD. What I did was export my file from FCP as an m4v, and then I dragged my m4v file into the Compressor batch window and exported as Highest DVD 90 min 4:3. The end result was that it didnt look QUITE as nice as did playing through the AppleTV, but it looked a lot less grainy than it did on the DVD where the files werent first exported as m4vs. It also looks clear on a 4:3 interlaced tv.

My only issue now is that the m4v files tend to blur a bit more than the original mpeg2 files did, but in return, there is a lot less of that annoying grainy-ness in the video. Im wondering if after I export to m4v, if there is a better way to export to mpeg-2, if changing the bitrate or any of the options in the custom inspector window will make my picture less blurry. Anyways, i just thought I would share this with anyone interested, and also ask about any better compression options when converting my m4v file into a useable file for DVD? OR if anyone can tell me WHY an m4v file looks so much better?

    sorry that was a lot!
