  minimizing amount of re-rendering

  I was also interested to know if anyone has any suggestions on how to minimize the number of renders and re-renders required when making changes or edits on a clip(s) in a sequence. FCP seems to require a render every time you make a move or adjust a clip in your timeline.

  If you drop a clip into your timeline, and you IMMEDIATELY have to render, that is a big RED FLAG that something is wrong. You should never have to render your footage when you drop it into your timeline. This means that the sequence settings don’t match your clip settings.

  When you start a project, you need to choose an EASY SETUP that matches the footage you are going to capture…then IMMEDIATELY trash Sequence 1. That has the OLD settings. Create a new sequence and start using that. If you still have to render, then the settings aren’t right. Look at all the characteristics of the clip (frame size, compressor, frame rate) and make sure they match the sequence settings. Do this and you won’t need to render.

  All of this nonsense goes away with FCP 6. It changes the sequence to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. ABOUT TIME if you ask me.
