We are working on a project with multiple formats, and not enough money to get things transfered professionally. Typical making up for lack of capital with human capital…

We are working predominantly with JVC 720p24 HDV media, but the geniuses also have a 1080i60 Canon HDV camera that we need to work with. After trying various conversion processes that really don’t work, I realized that the 1080i media rendered in the 720p workspace was by far and away the best. Is it possible to do a large, batch render, then remove those created files from the RENDER folder, put them in CAPTURE SCRATCH, and import then back into the project like any other media file. Obviously, we would not have sound, but we could make sync reels without too much trouble.

Has anyone tried this? Are there timecode or any other issues that I am not anticipating down the line? Will we have to eye match everything when we go to the online?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

just select all clips that you want to convert in the browser
    go ‘File – batch export’
choose your setting for the folder (highlight folder in export window, click on the setting button)
choose destination. (do not choose the same as they come from!)
once you have your new folder with all converted files you can again highlight your clips in the browser and choose ‘reconnect meda’ and point it to your new folder.
If you do the ‘reconnect’ with a copy of your project, you end up with 2 projects, one using the original files, the other the converted.
if you don’t do any frame rate conversions the TC will not change. If you do not recapture your footage for final online, you don’t need to worry about anything.

No – the render files are not useable as stand-alone video files – you need to export the rendered clips via the method cofe describes so well.

The render files are absolutely useable as stand alone files. They simply quicktime files. However, they have no knowledge of timecode or reel numbers or any of that. So I wouldn’t put them in my capture scratch. Capture scratch should be reserved for timecode material. It just makes life simpler. Treat any render files you use as stand alone files as animation files from your graphic artist. Back them up the same way. And you’ll need to remove them from the render folder or else they will potentially get deleted by fcp. Put them in a separate folder on the same hard drive as your capture scratch and render folders.
