  • FCP HD 4.5 doesn’t recognize device

Suddenly I can no longer capture clips because my computer doesn’t recognize the capturing device(s) (Sony GV-D1000).

I have tried this on two of my computers with two different capturing devices.

I suspect some sort of download upgrade is the culprit as it is suddenly happenning on two computers.

All of the firewire ports recognize other external hard drives (Under System Profile/Hardware/Firewire) but not the GV-D1000 or the PD150 camera, and so it appears that the ports are okay.

User groups say to remove the QuickTime receipt files – I have done this.

The A/V -> DV Out is set to off.

Computers are G4 and a Power Book.

Is there a QuickTime update or some other recent update that would cause this? What else should I look for? How do I get rid of the upgrade?

If I need to uninstall and reinstall QuickTime Pro, which I have already paid for, how do I do this without paying for QuickTime Pro again?

FCP 4.5 and MacOS 10.4.9 don’t work together. This is a known Apple issue. Their solution is to reinstall your OS and update to 10.4.8 ONLY.

OR…this is this nifty trick that someone figured out:

    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View menu, choose Spotlight.
    3. Click the Privacy tab to reveal the areas that Spotlight will not index.
    4. In the Finder, open your “Final Cut Pro Documents” folder.
    5. Drag the Capture Scratch folder into Spotlight’s list.

I’ll take a look at that, but I’m confused as to why this has been working fine for a couple of years and now suddenly it’s not.

Did one of these automatic updates we receive change the software from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 recently?

Updates aren’t automatic. They computer will ask you if you want to update. If you clicked YES, then it most likely updated.

Never ever EVER update your system all willy-nilly like this. Compatibility issues always crop up with new updates. If this is your primary work machine, you need to get it humming and then leave it alone.

Thanks Shane, Do you know – would one of these updates have recently been from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 and have caused these sudden problems?

Yes. As I stated…FCP 4.5 and Mac OS 10.4.9 not working together is a known issue. Apple knows about it. In fact, it is a STICKY thread at the top of the Apple FCP forum.

You can go into system preferences>software update>installed updates and see exactly when it was installed
